Standard-based Gazetteer Services

The Open GIS Consortium's proposal of a "Gazetteer Service Specification" and the ISO Draft International Standard 19112 "Geographic information - Spatial referencing by geographic identifiers" establish a basis for designing interoperable gazetteer services. In a German regional (Northrhine Westphalian) geospatial data infrastrucure initiative gazetteer services are currently being developed by using these building blocks. Main issues on the conceptual and the implementation level are related to the service protocol, the feature type schemas, and cascading services.
