Thesauri and Metadata Schemata at Microsoft: Vocabularies, Tools, Metrics
Presentation at the NKOS Workshop, ACM DL'99, Berkeley, August 14, 1999

Karen Eliasen
Lead Knowledge Architect, Information Services, Microsoft

This brief talk will focus on current efforts to bring together various existing thesauri and metadata schemata within Microsoft. The approach involves creating a core set of vocabularies that support a preferred set of metatags, building a vocabulary management tool that allows distributed access/management, and establishing a metadata registry that integrates existing vocabularies and metadata schemata. In addition, efforts to measure the value added by vocabulary control and schema integration to the functionality and usability of the corporate intranet will be described.
